We are proud to share a historic milestone in our collaboration with the Swedish Trade Unions, where through Swedish international cooperation, we provided key advice to 24 Guatemalan unions for their submission of amicus curiae within the arbitration tribunal derived from the labor chapter of the DR-CAFTA Trade Agreement.
This groundbreaking project marked the first time in history that a labor dispute arising from a Free Trade Agreement was presented, highlighting the innovation and positive impact of global collaboration in the labor sphere. On this unique occasion, the United States sued Guatemala for relaxing labor rights and union freedoms, alleging that these actions aimed to attract trade and investment to their territory.
Through our advice, the 24 Guatemalan unions were able to present their arguments forcefully in the arbitration tribunal, contributing to an unprecedented legal process that had significant implications for labor rights under international trade agreements. This initiative not only underscores the importance of defending labor rights globally but also the crucial role that international cooperation plays in promoting justice and equity.
